|
Has officially spread to 125 countries, with about ~84000 confirmed cases, and ~500 deaths. This makes a mortality rate of %0.6, noticably higher than the mortality rate of regular flu (%0.1). In comparison, Spanish Flu (which infected 1/3 of the world population between 1918-1920 and killed up to 100 million) had a mortality rate of %6 and SARS had a mortality rate of %9.6. SARS was not too contagious, that was what prevented a "medical holocaust". However, swine flu is more contagious than regular flu, and perhaps as contagious as Spanish flu. Swine flu isn't fatal enough to KEEL US ALL!! at the moment, but if it mutates to a more fatal version keeping its contagiousness, the world could be in deep shtrouble. Not scare mongering here, it's probably unlikely, but still possible. |

Ah, yes, this outbreak has been the cause of my worries since I heard about it. I don't know what's going to happen, but it's very, very worrisome. I just hope everything goes well. _________________

I hope it doesn't get too bad. As far as I know, nobody has it where I live yet, so I'm lucky for now. _________________ SO I HERD U LIEK MUDKIPZ?!?! |

People get too hyped up over one thing, and because of that it makes them paranoid. I don't see what makes this swine flu any different from any other flu. Same symptoms, right? So why is everyone so worried about it?
Personally, I'm not worried in the least. I have bigger things to think about than just a measly little epidemic. |
Well yes, we can say it's a bit overhyped. However, ignoring swine flu will do us no good. It is not too dangerous atm, but as you know flu viruses mutate quickly and we don't know whether the virus will stay like this or mutate to a more dangerous state.
You say how it's different from regular flu. Yes, similar symptoms, but swine flu is more severe. As I stated in the first post, swine flu has a six times higher mortality rate than regular flu (%0.1 vs %0.6). |

| Quote: | | "in the US it appears that for every 1000 people who get infected, about 40 people need admission to hospital and about one person dies". | The fact that one person dies from the flu is the reason we have to be aware of it. Sure, it's 1/1000, what odds will it be me who dies, right?
Wrong. Swine flu spreads easier than normal flu. If one person is ignorant about this epidemic and decide to just let it be, he may spread the flu to let's say, 5 more people. And that 5 people may also be ignorant and spread it to another 5 person. So now, it's 5x5+1. Then the other 25 people spread it to another 5 people, and soon enough, that number will exceed 1000.
If it's not prevented, the outbreak may kill a lot. Infants are the concerned here, because they have weaker bodies and are prone to a lot of sickness.
It is supposed to be overhyped, and because it has the same symptoms as normal flu, everyone should be aware and seek medical treatment immediately as soon as they feel like they caught a cold. As Gnaaye mentioned, soon enough, the virus may mutate and kill dozens of lives if everyone would just "let it be". _________________

Actually, with the current numbers we have; for every 1000 people who get infected, 6 die. It's not only infants who are at risk. Elderly people, (+60 years old) toddlers, people who live in poverty, pregnant women and people with other health problems (diabetes, asthma, HIV/AIDS, heart illnesses, cancer, etc.) are also very vulnerable to flu and will need medical attention.
EDIT: When I created this topic yesterday, there were ~84000 cases. Today, there are 89315 confirmed cases, with the virus also detected in Uganda, bringing the total number of countries to 126. See? |

i fear for the newlyborn infants the most, elderly can die for all i care
*cough* That's an interesting fact Gnaaye presented. Proof that the epidemic is becoming worse as time passes and the need to be aware of the current situation, regardless of overhyped or not.
And 5000+ cases over a day? That's severe. _________________

| Since my last post, it is confirmed that the virus is also seen in Croatia, bringing the total countries to 127. As of now, the confirmed cases stand at 89921 and the total deaths at 516. The virus does spread quicky, you see. |

When I said I really wasn't all that worried or concerned, that doesn't mean that I would go on willy-nilly as if nothing happened. Of course it exists, and as such I had to be aware of it.
Coincidentally, I got sick right around when the swine flu was first discovered, around the area of California's San Diego County/Mexico (San Diego is only about 80 miles from where I live). I didn't really think it was swine flu, but I exercised common sense at the very least: try and keep active to speed up recovery, don't go out too often in fear of spreading it, etc. It turned out to be just a normal cold and I recovered 3 days after I caught it. (Note: I don't get sick very often - like, 3 times a year at the most - so getting sick for me is annoying, but manageable.) The big part about it was I didn't freak out when I got sick...which is actually a good approach to life in general. But I digress.
I think Lucid presented something interesting when he said this:
| Quote: | | If one person is ignorant about this epidemic and decide to just let it be, he may spread the flu to let's say, 5 more people. And that 5 people may also be ignorant and spread it to another 5 person. So now, it's 5x5+1. Then the other 25 people spread it to another 5 people, and soon enough, that number will exceed 1000. |
What if the great majority of the cases involve ignorant people doing exactly that? To be perfectly honest I would not be too surprised. But if that's the case, the word needs to get out faster.
Yes, the infants and the elderly are the ones that we need to look more out for here. Since I openly admitted I get sick only 3 times a year, getting sick for me is no problem at all, and I keep on going as if I wasn't sick at all (though I do take the usual precautions to prevent it spreading).
...I think I unintentionally boiled down my post to 'If more people exercised common sense, this problem wouldn't be half as big as it is now'. _________________

The best thing to do is remain aware and calm, as many before me have stated.
All we can do is hope for the best, as bad as this flu thing gets. _________________

| As of now, the illness has spread to 162 countries, with deaths in 33 countries. There are ~187000 confirmed cases and 1408 confirmed deaths; and there are 77 unconfirmed deaths in Mexico and 9 unconfirmed deaths in Chile. Ain't that severe? |

A lot of schools and colleges in my country are ordered to close because of several cases of this influenza. In my area alone, more than 6 university campuses suspended their academic sessions, although interestingly enough, mine is not.
Should I be glad that there's no swine flu case in my campus yet, or be sad because everyone else is getting early holidays?
On a more serious note; yes, the influenza is spreading in an obviously alarming rate. The number of death in my small country alone has reached 4, with the number of infection being about 1300+. Seriously, this is serious. _________________
